Making your own kefir is one of those perfect kitchen projects that lets you serve your family something both delicious and healthy.

Think of kefir as yogurt’s tangier, more probiotic-packed cousin – a creamy, fermented drink that’s been nourishing families for generations.

A History of Kefir

For centuries, families in Eastern Europe, Russia, and Central Asia passed down kefir grains as precious heirlooms.

Mountain shepherds discovered that fresh milk carried in leather pouches would naturally ferment into this tangy, effervescent drink that stayed fresh during long journeys.

The word “kefir” itself comes from the Turkish word “keif,” meaning “good feeling” – a perfect description of how you’ll feel after enjoying this nutritious drink!

The best part? You can make it right in your kitchen using our farm-fresh raw milk.

We’re excited to share our treasured grains with you – these little clusters of beneficial bacteria and yeast that we sourced from Eastern Europe.

Simple to Make

Here’s your simple guide to creating this wholesome drink:

Start with a clean glass jar (pint or quart size works great).

Avoid using metal utensils and chlorinated water which can harm the beneficial organisms.

A wooden or plastic spoon works perfectly.

Add your grains to the jar.

Pour in your fresh milk from Clover Creek—just enough to cover the grains generously.

Cover with a loose-fitting lid, and let it sit at room temperature for 24 hours.

After a day, you’ll notice the grains floating to the top – that means they’re happy and active!

Gently scoop them out with your wooden spoon and transfer them to a fresh jar.

Your kefir is now ready to enjoy!

We love to blend it with frozen or fresh fruit and a little sweetner for a nutritious breakfast smoothie.

Terry likes to add a tablespoon or two of cocoa powder to hers to make a chocolate shake and I like to add some fruit juice or a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to my smoothie.

To keep your kefir grains thriving, simply repeat this process.

They’ll multiply over time – perfect for sharing with a friend who’s interested in starting their healthy kefir journey!

Pro tip: If you’re heading on vacation or need a break, just pop your grains in the fridge with fresh milk.

They’ll slow down their activity and only need fresh milk once a week.
